Headquartered in beautiful La Crescenta,
CA, China Pearl is the proud seller of a
bountiful and diverse catalog of pearls
to nearly 10,000 retailers across the
United States.
China Pearl’s success is the culmination
of a quarter-century of hard work,
relationship building, business acumen
and above all, a focused and unyielding
commitment to providing high quality and
low cost pearls on-time and backed by
innovative promotional ideas and other
key behind-the-scenes support to their
clients. This in turn helps clients keep
their prices low and their profit
margins high.
Founded in 1983 by President / CEO
Harold Jabarian, China Pearl has built a
reputation as a provider of high quality
product, consistent on-time delivery and
experience-based service and support
from expert employees. China Pearl
customers include department stores,
chain stores and independent retailers.
Major clients include Macy’s, Kohl’s, JC Penney, T.J. Maxx, Ross, Fred Meyer, Belk’s, QVC, Home Shopping Network, Helzberg Diamonds, Zales and others.
China Pearl produces pearls under the
"CP" brand label. The company also
provides clients with private label
goods, in addition to related services
such as customized boxes and packaging.
China Pearl also prides itself on
carrying sufficient shop stock. If a
client underestimates their product
needs, supplemental stock can be
immediately shipped from La Crescenta,
CA.
China Pearl specializes only in pearls.
The company does not deal in emeralds or
rubies or any other stones. The result
of that specialization is an immense
product catalog featuring 12,000 distinct
pearl designs and jewelry. And China Pearl does not
rest on its laurels, either. Every six
months, 500-600 of those pearl designs
are replaced by new ones.
As
the company name might suggest, China
Pearl’s business is rooted in Chinese
freshwater pearls. But that 20-year-old
moniker does not tell the full story of
the company’s pan-Pacific product line.
Today, China Pearl’s forte extends to
Chinese Akoya, White and Golden South
Sea Pearls, and Tahitian Black Pearls.
China Pearl also creates jewelry items
including rings, earrings and pendants,
in gold and silver.
In
1980, Jabarian was sent to Hong Kong
with instructions to open and manage a
pearl factory. The manufactured gems
were then exported back to the Japanese
office.
Three years later, in 1983, Jabarian
launched China Pearl. Jabarian built his
own manufacturing factory in Hong Kong
and at first, shipped and sold only to
exporters. Soon, the new company
realized it made financial and
competitive sense to export directly and
from 1983-86, China Pearl became one of
the largest manufacturers and exporters
in the industry. About that time,
fledgling Chinese domestic operations
began to flood the market. This practice
caused great industry upheaval and led
China Pearl to re-evaluate their
business model.
Meanwhile, the company achieved
impressive milestones. In 1985, China
Pearl first exhibited at the Hong Kong
Jewelry Convention. They gained
customers in New York, France, Germany,
Italy, Spain, and elsewhere. By 1989,
China Pearl had grown in size to 240
employees. That same year, the
manufacturing portion of the company was
relocated to mainland China. |
That
relocation was followed a few years
later by an even bigger move. In 1995,
China Pearl shifted its headquarters
from Hong Kong to downtown Los Angeles,
California. The decision was made in
part because approximately 65% of the
company’s production was in the United
States.
By
1997, China Pearl had found and grown
quickly into their now permanent niche:
selling pearls directly to retailers,
chain stores and department stores, and
thereby eliminating intermediate brokers
whose service fees drive up competitors’
prices. China Pearl, on the other hand,
maintains an almost vertical integration
and is able to offer high quality and
low prices. Also, thanks to decades-long
relationships with three of China’s
seven leading pearl farmers, China Pearl
is able to meet extremely high-quantity
orders.
That
simple formula has worked wonders. Every
year from 1997-2006,
China Pearl sales rose 15-20% annually.
During the high-growth period, in 1997,
China Pearl opened an office in Bangkok,
Thailand. Other milestones of the era
include China Pearl’s 1999 receipt of
the Mervyn’s "Speed is Light" Vendor
Award of Excellence. In 2000, the "CP"
brand was launched. And for years, China
Pearl has exhibited at major industry
trade shows and advertised in jewelry
magazines.
In
2003, with sales still strong and client
satisfaction running as high as ever,
China Pearl celebrated their 20th
anniversary by producing and releasing
"Pearl Harvest," a breathtakingly
beautiful documentary by acclaimed
filmmaker extraordinaire, Gianfranco
Rosi.
China Pearl commissioned the documentary
in response to questions from clients
about the process of creating a pearl,
from organic mollusk to finished
product. "Pearl Harvest" also comes with
the complimentary copy of "The
Fundamentals of Pearls" - a
straightforward text also commissioned
by China Pearl that introduces readers
to pearl varieties worldwide.
In
2007, China Pearl is introducing shop
online to all independent retailers.
China Pearl looks forward to receiving
your continued business, or to making
your acquaintance.
